Writing Extension

1. Character Letter

Dear Peter,

The hail of bullet fire and screams of agony have not yet begun and the fear of pain has already chilled me to the bone. The dirty trenches offer little protection from the invasion of French and Russian soldiers yet to come. Our head officer told me these “green” experiences are all part of a first time soldier, that doesn’t matter. Whatever fears that may distract me just shorten my distance from death’s clutches. It’s like what Kat said, “Hesitation is a soldier’s greatest enemy whether it is an opposing force or his fellow combatants” I trust his judgment more than my own in any battle. I guess seeing a working rifle next to me is comforting. The cool feel of the metal trigger reflects a man’s desire to kill another on the battlefield. Even I feel invincible at times despite the man-made fire breathing dragons and firestorm cannons other soldiers wield. It’s really the mortar that worries me, at any moment the guy next to you can take a mouthful of lead. I’ll make sure I keep myself alive so I can write to you again.

Your Dearest Friend,

Albert Kropp

2. Micheal Andrews "Mad World"

All around me are familiar faces

Worn out places - worn out faces

Bright and early for their daily races

Going nowhere - going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses

No expression - no expression

Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow

No tomorrow - no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funnyI find it kind of sad

The dreams in which I'm dyingAre the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell youI find it hard to take

When people run in circles it's a very, very...

Mad World, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good

Happy birthday - happy birthday

Made to feel the way that every child should

Sit and listen - sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous

No one knew me - no one knew me

Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson

Look right through me - look right through me

And I find it kind of funnyI find it kind of sad

The dreams in which I'm dyingAre the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell youI find it hard to take

When people run in circles it's a very, very...

Mad World, mad world
